What Are Porcelain Dental Veneers?

Porcelain dental veneers are tiny tooth-shaped sleeves made of translucent porcelain.  Veneers are bonded to the front surfaces of the teeth to conceal flaws such as chips, cracks, discoloration, and misalignment, making them the perfect smile makeover option.  Veneers are custom-crafted to complement and enhance the unique characteristics of a patient’s smile.  The result is an attractive, balanced smile filled with teeth that look and feel completely natural.

LUMINEERS® Dental Veneers

LUMINEERS® dental veneers are an excellent option for patients who wish to avoid the removal of part of their natural tooth enamel, which is necessary in the placement of traditional veneers.  LUMINEERS® are a type of “prepless” veneers; because they are much thinner than traditional veneers (about the size of a contact lens), they do not require reduction of the teeth.  Moreover, LUMINEERS® do not add bulk to the smile, and they are even removable (with, of course, a dentist’s help).  

Placement of LUMINEERS® Veneers

The placement process for LUMINEERS® porcelain veneers typically requires two visits to our office in Baton Rouge:  one to take molds of the teeth and mouth and a second to place the veneers.  (Since the teeth are not reduced, anesthetic is generally not necessary in either visit.)  The dentist sends the molds taken during the first visit to a dental laboratory, where lab technicians use them to custom-craft the patient’s LUMINEERS®.  When the LUMINEERS® are ready – usually in about a week – the patient returns for the second visit to have the veneers placed.  The dentist begins the placement process by lightly scuffing the teeth to allow for optimal bonding of the veneer to the tooth.  He then bonds the veneers to the teeth using dental-grade cement.  Finally, he buffs the veneers to a shine.  Porcelain veneers can last for many years with proper maintenance.
